Q. Is Medicare, Medicaid or any other government funding available for these services?

A. These funding sources could be available based on your individual situation, income and status. Remember, as with all government funding, there are rules and restrictions that you must adhere to. There may also be limitations to the funding amount and the types of services offered.

Q. Why would I hire a Home Care Company versus a private care giver?

A. YPS would recommend that you do not hire privately unless you are prepared to be an employer of care givers. The following are just a few of the things you must take into consideration when hiring privately.

• Once you hire a care giver privately, you are responsible for all state and federal payroll taxes.
• You must obtain Workers Compensation Insurance or make sure your private care giver comes with insurance. If not, you could be responsible for any injuries claimed to have happened while working at your home. How will you pay for any claims of disability, if they are filed against you?
• What happens if the private person doesn’t show up for work? Are you prepared to stay home and take care of your loved one? Or if the care is for you, are you prepared to be left alone without care if the care giver does not show up?
• Is the private care giver bonded against theft?
• Who will supervise him/her?

There are too many questions and problems when hiring privately. We do not recommend this option at all.

Q. Will there only be one care giver to provide the care needed?

A. No. You do not want just one care giver. You want a sufficient number of people, so that if a person calls off work, you have another care giver who knows your needs to provide quality services for you. You also do not want to become dependent upon only one person. This would put you in a position that could, and often does, allow that one person to be in control. You must, and always should be, in control of your care.

Q. What services should I be looking for in an in-home care company, that would indicate superior or high-quality services for my loved one?

A. The best in-home care companies provide immediate response to your home care needs.

• They should have someone available to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
• They should guarantee that services will always be provided.
• Their employees will be bonded against theft.
• The attendants will be company employees. They will screen their employees and have criminal background checks run on each of them.
• No one will show up at your home without an introduction.
• They will provide periodic visits to your home in order to check on their employee and to make sure that you are happy with the services.
